On Friday January 24, 2020 the Western Mustangs Women’s Hockey team took on the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Ladies played hard but fell short with a final score of 3-1. The Voyageurs took the lead within the first 10 minutes of the first period. Their goal was scored by Natalie Lamarche and was assisted by Megan Arnott and Julia Giannitsopoulos. The Mustangs attempted to catch up but could not put one past all-star goalie Shanna Dolighan.
Leading the shots-on-goal 15-8 for the first period, the Mustangs were hopeful to come back in the second period. With many missed opportunities, the score remained 1-0 heading into the third. It was evident that both teams wanted the win.
Within the first 15 minutes of the third period, the Voyageurs’ very own Regan Toltesi scored a goal with help from Abbey Caldwell. With 5 minutes to spare, Hannah Irwin managed to put one in the net with help from Rachel Armstrong for the Mustangs. Coach Candice Moxley then pulled goalie Tareya Webster, in hopes to tie the score. However, this led Laurentian’s Annie Sheridan to score an empty net goal, assisted by Megan Arnott.
After the game, Radio Western caught up with Western’s head coach Candice Moxley and asked about her thoughts on the game. “We weren’t getting our bodies in front of their goaltender and making her life difficult. She kicked out some pretty hot rebounds, we have to be ready for those and we have to be willing to pay the price to get the job done. We had a lot of great chances, but it’s just one of those games. We ran into a hot goaltender and [the Laurentian Voyageurs] capitalized on opportunities that we gave them. It’s a tough night, but we have to score goals to figure it out. We’ll be back to the drawing board tomorrow.”
The Mustangs will play again tomorrow, Saturday January 25, 2020 at Thompson Arena against the Nipissing Lakers. They are hoping to bring home a win and are looking forward to the rest of their season.
