On Saturday November 23, 2019 the Western Mustangs’ hockey team played a tough game against the Windsor Lancers, with a final score of 5-2.
After playing the Lancers in Windsor the night before, taking a tough loss of 6-2, the Western Mustangs came out to the ice looking for a win at Thompson Arena. Going into this game the Mustangs were on a 2 game losing streak, and the Lancers on a 4 game winning streak.
Both Goaltenders came out to play for the night, with beautiful saves from Windsor’s Jonathan Reinhart and Western’s Lucas Peressini. The Lancers merely outshot the Mustangs 34-33.
After the first period the Lancers were up 2-0 on the Mustangs. The Mustangs came back in the second period with goals from Ethan Szypula and Franco Sproviero, and the Lancers scored one. The Lancers then took the third period, scoring 2 goals, bringing the final score to 5-2.
Player, Ethan Szypula states, “The chemistry has been good [this season], we’ve been practicing the power plays, we kinda know where everyone is, we’ve been getting a lot of repetition in, I feel that if we consistently keep doing that, and doing our little things, it’ll keep going in the net for us”.
It is no secret that these two teams are rivals. The Mustangs had a total of 24 penalty minutes and Windsor had 32 minutes. Ethan Szypula states; “they lead the league in penalty minutes, and we knew that coming into the game, they have easily over 100 penalty minutes than we do. I feel that we let our emotions run a little high and they got the best of us. Coming in we just have to be a little more prepared. It’s just discipline and I know we can be a little better and it’ll be better for us.”
The Mustangs will be playing their next game against the Guelph Gryphons this Friday, November 29, 2019.
