On Sunday September 29, 2019, the Western Mustangs female rugby team played a hard-fought battle against the McMaster Marauders. With outstanding plays from both teams, the Mustangs fell short with the final score of 96-0. After concluding the final game of the regular season, the Mustangs finished with a record of 0-4, and the Marauders 2-2.
The girls fought a hard game but could not score a try. The McMaster Marauders were strong competition, scoring their first try within the first 2 minutes of play. The Mustangs battled hard but could touch the ball in the end zone. With strong defense, and powerful tackles, the girls could not catch up to the leading Marauders.
Although the team took a tough loss, head coach Katherine Baer is proud of the girls and the progress that they have made this season. She states, “Today is the last game of our regular season, so going into today we were very excited to see what we’ve been working on and to see what we put on the field; and the feeling after the game? Still excited. This is our base for building into playoffs. I’m very proud of the girls and how they played today.” The Mustangs’ team has 2-3 games left in the season, Baer says, and she is excited to see what that means for them. Captain Meaghan Gregoris #3 who played Prop states that, “Although it was a tough loss, we have improved a lot. We’ve come a long way and I’m honestly super proud of how we played, and I hope that we can keep this momentum going into our next game.” Charlie Finlay #10 played Fly-half on the weekend and added, “We came up as a team, and it is the little successes that we’re looking for right now. We’re not looking for that big win, we’re looking for little success that will lead to a win, and that’s our end goal.”
The girls are looking forward to their playoff season, and to what the future holds for them.
