The Western Mustangs football team were looking to win their 5th consecutive game and continue their dominance over OUA football on Saturday September 21st as they took on the Guelph Gryphons over in Guelph. The Gryphons lost their opener this season to McMaster, but have been dominant ever since, winning their next three all by double digits.
The Mustangs won the defensive chess match by a final score of 9-3.
The first half was slow, as the only points scored were two field goals by Mustangs kicker Marc Liegghio. A 23 yarder and a 27 yarder. One noteworthy thing that happened in the first half was that on the second field goal kicked by Marc Liegghio he became the Mustangs all team leader in field goals made and points scored. Marc Liegghio or as the locals call him “legz” is in his last year of eligibility and is hoping to move onto the CFL next season.
The first half was hampered by sloppy play and missed opportunities. Both teams missing 2nd down conversions and bad penalties. This was highlighted by the Guelph Gryphons having a 50-yard touchdown called back due to a holding call.
The second half was much of the same thing, as each side exchanged field goals, to bring the score to 9-3 but that was about it. The Gryphons had the ball on their own 4-yard line with 2:28 to play and a chance to steal the game. It was then when Gryphons wide receiver Abdel-Rahim ran a deep post that got away from both mustang’s safety. Abdel-Rahim was running free, with what looked like it could have been a game stealing touchdown. But thankfully for the mustangs, Guelph quarterback Theo Landers, overthrew his receiver and the ball fell incomplete.
Guelph did sustain that drive for a little while, going 66 yards before eventually turning it over on downs, but it was too little too late, as the Mustangs held on for the 9-3 win.
The Mustangs next game will be next Saturday September 28th versus the Windsor Lancers, this game will take place in Windsor. The Lancers are coming into this game 1-4 after losing their last four games.
