Word Up! 24 Hour Celebration of Hip-Hop Culture

Break North Radio Trish Kiwanuka Mon Aug 13th

What a Day!

The first ever Word Up! 24 hour celebration of Hip-Hop Culture was a total success!

DJ Hullewud of Break North Radio spearheaded this awesomely dope-filled day for us. With 24 hours of Hip-Hop programming, Hip-Hop's 45th Birthday was honoured in style!!

Tyler Hetherington formerly of The Consignment show, kicked off the day with The Word Up! Kick-Off show; a 2 hour show centralized around the Rap Essentials Canadian Hip-Hop compilation from the mid-nineties.
John Urban dropped the Maple Sizzurb show from 2-4am, profiling Canadian Hip-Hop as well. From 4-6am, DJ Unkle Ando broke into Hard of Hearing. Chase March schooled us in Know Your History before The Freeway show took over with Jux n' Juke in the Morning on Radio Western.

The day was off to a great start and if you stayed up all night, the best was yet to come!

The late morning and afternoon yielded more Hip-Hop with AB Quality and drummachinemike with Around The Way up until 11am, and some more education with DJ Hullewud's It's a Def Jam - profiling the artists of the early days of Def Jam Recordings.

Sum-One kicked off her 4 part interview series where she interviewed 4 of Canada's Hip-Hop Greats; Shad, Maestro Fresh Wes, Eternia and Dan-e-o with The Word Up! Interview series. Followed by DJ Unkle Ando with special guests, Sneaks, Thesis and DJ Gripski on the lines with All You Can Eat-Random Rap Facts.

She-Styles followed the ever entertaining Unkle Ando and guests, where MC Sum-One profiled early female MC's from the 80's and 90's with a 30 minute installment on RnB collaborations in the mid-nineties as well.

Kiv hosted The Come Up Show in its usual Saturday evening slot, followed by MoDi Dahjah of the Positive Journey with a show reminiscent of his Destruction Productions CHRW 94.7FM days.

MoDi Dahjah was one of the very first DJ's at Radio Western in the 80's to bring Hip-Hop to the airwaves. A lot of what we were able to achieve with our Word Up! day can be attributed to this host right here.

The night ended with an explosive 4 Elements-Break North Radio tribute by DJ Hullewud, and had special guests Crucial and Uncle Fester call in to help celebrate and honour Hip-Hop's 45th birthday.

A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this years day.. it was all worth it!

Til' next time...
