On Saturday February 2nd, 2019, the London Music Hall of Fame held an event dedicated to bringing awareness to mental health issues in the arts and music community. With an open bar and live music this was a fun event that helped raise money for the non-profit, Mind Your Mind. Mind Your Mind is about inspiring youth to reach out and give help. This award wining mental health program works with youth, emerging adults and the professionals to co-develop reliable and relevant resources to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health, increase access and the use of community support when dealing with issues related to mental health.
When talking to some of the organizers of the event I asked why they wanted to focus on mental health. They stated that “mental health is a very real and ongoing issue that has effected so many musicians. As the London Music Hall of Fame, they wanted to host an event that shed light on this issue”.
I also got the opportunity to speak to one of the performers, Tyler Stewart also known as Stewie about why this event was so important to him. Stewie then said “mental health is something that will always be important and that we should never give up on someone with a mental illness. When “I” is replaced with “WE” illness becomes wellness and that is when we can start making real progress”. The night followed with performances by Sarnia Haggarty, Soft Sigh, Sleeper Dox, and Labeled Minority with Chase March as a DJ.
