CALPURNIA - FANBOYING OVER FINN

Gobs Sat Jul 21st

I'm gonna come right out and say that I'm a huge fan of FINN WOLFHARD. I really enjoy STRANGER THINGS and thought IT was a great movie. His performances in both are top notch and neither production would be as good without him. I'll admit it totally feels weird being a full grown adult and fanboying over a kid, and it's not lost on me that this 15-year-old is way more cool then I'll ever be. Oh well.

Needless to say, I waited with anticipation for the release of SCOUT, the first EP from Finn's band, CALPURNIA. Now that it's here, I can say that I have three reasons to love Finn. Okay, four. The PUP MUSIC VIDS that feature Finn and Calpurnia's drummer, Malcolm Craig, are also THE BEST!

SCOUT is a great listen. The EP flows through a range of different sounds and influences, morphing steadily throughout. Sure, the lyrics are a bit juvenile, but why shouldn't they be? Musically speaking, you would never know that you're listening to a band made up of kids ranging in age from 15 to 17. The song structure is reminiscent of rock n roll from decades well before any of the musicians were born, which has many writers referring to the band as "old souls".

For me, the EP's stand out track is GREYHOUND, which sees Calpurnia exploring their PIXIES INFLUENCE. The song is now accompanied by a fantastic MUSIC VIDEO.

There's a deeper theme happening here, which makes me excited to be along for the ride as this band's song writing matures. I can't wait to see and hear what they do in the future.
