  • After 19 bargaining sessions, the school and the union representing the workers, UWOFA-LA, reached a last-minute tentative agreement late Monday, averting the potential strike that was scheduled to begin Tuesday.
  • “The tentative deal means there will be no strike. All services and operations continue as normal,” Western officials wrote in a statement.
  • Both the school and the union are recommending their members to ratify the agreement.
  • A ratification vote for the 42 workers, who have been without a contract since June 30, has yet to be scheduled.
  • Western’s Board of Governors will only vote on the deal if it is ratified by the workers.
  • The terms of the agreement will not be made public until after ratification, Western officials said.

  • The London non-profit has collected more than 2,800 kilograms of food since Friday, the launch of its 31st annual Thanksgiving food drive. In comparison, last year, the agency received nearly 3,200 kilograms of food on the opening weekend of its fall campaign.
  • The subdued start to the food drive isn’t exactly unexpected. The food bank has noticed drives during elections have taken longer to gain traction.
  • Further, a lot of public attention this weekend was focused on the looming strike by Ontario education workers.
  • This year’s fall campaign comes as the aid agencies are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of seniors relying on its services.
  • The London Food Bank helped 667 seniors this past March, according to statistics compiled by the non-profit in concert with partner agencies in the city.
  • The total is an increase of 6.5 per cent from the same month in 2018, but a 43 per cent jump from the rate five years ago. The London Food Bank says the number of seniors seeking help from the agency has risen 133 per cent during the last decade.
  • In 2018, the food bank distributed more than 42,000 hampers of food to people in need throughout the city. It assisted nearly 10,500 different households comprised of a total of 25,000 people.
  • The London Food Bank collected 1.1 million kilograms of food last year.
